The Black Prince spent the summer of 1358 travelling round his estates. In August he visited Cheshire, where his officials had levied substantial fines on the foresters of Wirral and Delamere the previous year. The money was now due and he wanted to supervise its collection. The Prince had appointed a panel of judges to investigate his rights. He was looking to make money, and now was prepared to do so in the teeth of local opposition. One of his foresters, Robert Foxwist, was physically threatened while gathering information for the inquiry and had to be placed under special protection. The Prince recorded that ‘diverse men in our lordship of Macclesfield and elsewhere in the county of Chester, hardened ill-wishers of Robert Foxwist, are threatening him in life and limb, so that he dare not continue with his work’.
The work that Foxwist was undertaking for the Prince was critical to his purpose – full exploitation of his rights depended on the unglamorous end of estate management, secret informationgathering and informing on others. He continued: ‘Foxwist hath great matters to prosecute against diverse persons in our county of Chester, and many things in hand for our profit.’ The Prince instructed his officials to take all steps necessary to protect Foxwist’s life, adding that he knew who was behind the threats:
